About this scholarship

Paola Sandri Research Fellowship

You will receive a one-off payment of 1,000 EUR for a research placement of at least one month in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macao, to be undertaken as part of your PhD. The scholarship (a one-off research grant) is awarded by the Institute for Transtextual and Transcultural Studies (IETT) at the Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3. It was established in her memory by the family of Paola Sandri. She was a PhD student in the Department of Chinese Studies and Transcultural Studies and passed away in 2006 whilst conducting her doctoral research in Beijing.

Who can apply

  • Study level: You are enrolled on a PhD programme, regardless of which year of your PhD you are in.
  • Where you study: You are enrolled at a French higher education institution.
  • Field of study: Your dissertation is in the humanities or social sciences and focuses on the Chinese world, for example in the field of Sinology or cultural studies.
  • Where you go: Your planned research visit will take place in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macau and will last for at least one month.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Age: No age limit.
  • No double funding: You are not currently receiving any other research fellowship or research grant.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted by email to the IETT. Please send an application form, your CV, a covering letter and a project description of at least 2,000 words. Your supervisor should submit a letter of recommendation directly. The application deadline is 14 December. An assessment panel will review the applications, and the Sandri family will make the final decision.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship has very specific eligibility criteria: you must be a PhD student at a French institution, your research must focus on the Chinese world, and you must be planning a stay in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macao. This leaves only a small group of potential applicants. If you clearly meet these criteria and submit a convincing project proposal, your chances are good. Please note that the payment is a modest one-off grant and not full funding.
