What Chevening covers

You will be awarded a fully funded one-year master's degree at a UK university, so there is no fixed amount of money. The UK government will cover your tuition fees in full and will also provide you with a monthly living allowance to help with rent and living costs. The allowance is higher in London than elsewhere and is reviewed each year. In addition, you will receive a return economy-class flight from your home country, the fee for your UK visa application, a lump sum for arrival and departure, a travel allowance, and up to 75 GBP for a TB test, if required. You will also become part of the Chevening network, comprising over 55,000 former scholars, which offers events and contacts within government, the business sector and partner organisations. The programme is administered by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and supports around 1,500 scholarship holders each year.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You would like to undertake a one-year on-campus Master’s programme in the UK. You already hold a Bachelor’s degree that qualifies you for a Master’s programme in the UK.
• Work experience: You have at least two years’ professional experience (approximately 2,800 hours) gained since completing your bachelor’s degree.
• Field of study: Any topic is fine.
• University: You are applying for three different eligible degree programmes in the UK and have received at least one unconditional offer by the application deadline. Any recognised UK university counts, including Oxford, Cambridge, the LSE and UCL.
• Nationality: You are a national of one of the 160 or more countries eligible for the Chevening Scholarship. You must not hold British citizenship or dual British citizenship (there are narrow exceptions for British Overseas Territories and holders of a BN(O) passport in Hong Kong). You must not be resident in the United Kingdom at the time of application.
• Return commitment: You undertake to return to your home country for at least two years once the scholarship has ended.
• Age: No upper age limit.
• Previous funding: You have not previously studied in the UK on a British Government scholarship. You are neither an employee nor a close relative of a British Government department, the British Council or a partner university.

How to apply

You apply online via your country’s page on the Chevening website. The application deadline for the 2027/28 academic year runs from 4 August to 6 October 2026 (11:00 UTC); after this date, the portal will close. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview at a British Embassy or High Commission in early 2027. If you are successful, you must submit at least one unconditional offer of a place from a UK higher education institution by 8 July 2027.

How realistic are your chances?

Chevening is a world-renowned, fully-funded scholarship, which consequently attracts highly qualified applicants. The selection process lasts eight months and comprises a written application and an interview. The requirements are not limited to the academic sphere: the selection panel looks for demonstrable leadership experience and ambition, so academic grades alone are not enough. If you meet the strict selection criteria (two years’ professional experience, a return plan and three well-chosen courses) and can demonstrate genuine leadership qualities, you stand a real chance – but be prepared for stiff competition.
