About this grant / loan
Benefit
This foundation covers the research and material costs for young doctors engaged in medical research into the causes and potential cures of diseases. It supports doctors as part of an ‘Academic Foundation Programme’, the early stage of training during which trainee doctors combine clinical work with research. You do not receive any cash yourself. The money is channelled through your medical school into your research. The foundation was established in 2005 following a donation from Professor Isaac Schapera. Its proceeds are divided amongst the four medical schools of the University of London.
Eligibility
- Level: You are a junior doctor on an academic training programme.
- Field: They carry out medical research into the causes and potential treatments of diseases.
- Where you study: You work at one of the four medical schools of the University of London: King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London, St George’s or University College London (UCL).
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
How to apply
You cannot apply directly to the University of London. Instead, please contact the relevant department at your medical school. They will decide how to allocate their share of the funds and set any deadlines.
How realistic are your chances?
This funding is aimed at a small, specific target group: junior doctors conducting research at one of the four London medical schools mentioned. As the pool of applicants is limited, those already taking part in an ‘Academic Foundation Programme’ at one of these faculties have a good chance of being considered. Your prospects depend on your faculty’s specific procedures; you should therefore contact your department at an early stage.
