About this scholarship
What the Marshall Scholarship gives you
You will be offered a fully-funded postgraduate programme at a university in the United Kingdom. The scholarship covers your full tuition fees as well as a monthly living allowance of approximately 1,690 EUR (approximately £1,452 per month outside London and £1,781 in London; these amounts are adjusted annually). In addition, your return economy-class flights between the US and the UK, your UK visa fees and your access to the National Health Service will be covered. Depending on your course, you may be funded for one year, two years or, in the case of a PhD, for up to three years. Up to 50 scholarships are awarded each year. The programme is administered by a UK government agency and is primarily funded by the UK Department for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs – in gratitude for the post-war Marshall Plan.
Who can apply
- Nationality: You are a US citizen at the time of applying.
- Degree: You already hold a first bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.Sc.) from an accredited four-year US university, or will be due to complete one by September 2027.
- Grades: Your average mark is at least 3.7 on a scale of 4.0 (not rounded up).
- Timing: As you graduated after April 2024, this award is aimed at graduates from recent years.
- No prior UK study: You do not yet hold a UK higher education qualification and have not sat any GCSE or A-level exams in the UK.
- Field of study: Almost all fields of study are eligible. MBA programmes, Master’s programmes in finance and professionally qualifying degrees in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and law are not eligible for funding.
- Course type: You are enrolled on a full-time, on-campus degree programme. Distance-learning programmes, part-time programmes and certificate-only courses are not eligible for funding.
How to apply
You must apply online via the ASAMS portal and attach three references as well as your academic transcripts. Your university must confirm and forward your application. The application deadline is 29 September 2026 (5:00 in the time zone of your confirming institution), and confirmation from the institution must be received by 1 October. If you are shortlisted, you will attend a face-to-face interview in November at one of the eight regional centres in the USA.
How realistic are your chances?
This is one of the most sought-after scholarships for US graduates. There are up to 50 places available, for which applicants from across the country compete, and each university may nominate a maximum of 24 candidates. A GPA of 3.7 is merely the minimum requirement, as the selection process places equal weight on academic achievement, leadership qualities and potential as an ambassador. If you can demonstrate truly outstanding grades, proven leadership skills and community involvement, as well as a well-reasoned choice of degree programme and university, you stand a real chance. Expect fierce competition.
