Study Abroad Stipendium der Paris-Lodron-Universität Salzburg (PLUS)

What you get

You get a monthly grant towards living costs abroad plus a one-off travel allowance of up to 700 EUR. The University of Salzburg pays it for a study stay at one of its partner universities worldwide or through the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), a network that lets you study at a partner university abroad. The monthly rate depends on your destination, from about 146 EUR (many European countries) to 582 EUR (Japan). The United States and United Kingdom sit at 487 EUR, Germany and France at 350 EUR, Spain at 250 EUR. This is a top-up, not a full scholarship, so it covers part of your costs, not all of them. At partner universities you also pay no tuition fees. Your stay lasts at least one trimester (about three months) and at most one full academic year. If you have a disability, a chronic illness, children, or a relative you care for, you can apply for an extra top-up (the Friederike Zweig scholarship).

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are a regular degree student at the University of Salzburg.
• Study progress: You have completed at least two semesters there.
• Level: You are still studying. Graduates cannot be funded.
• Residence: Your main home is in Austria, and you have not yet started the planned stay abroad.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• State student aid: If you already receive the Austrian study allowance, you can still get this scholarship on top.

How to apply

First pick a partner university and contact the responsible coordinator. The coordinator nominates you and forwards your papers to that university. You then apply for the scholarship at the International Relations Office. There are four deadlines a year: 15 November, 1 February, 1 April and 1 June. Your complete application must arrive before the stay begins, because later approval is not possible.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is only for students already enrolled at the University of Salzburg who have finished two semesters, so the applicant pool is limited to one university. Selection runs through the programme coordinators rather than a formal interview. A well-prepared application with a clear academic reason and a confirmed exchange place stands a good chance. Contact your coordinator early, since the number of places at each partner university varies.
