What the National Scholarship Programme offered

Note: this scholarship no longer exists. The UK Government has cut its funding and discontinued support for undergraduate students from 2015. The University of Worcester now lists other funding opportunities instead, such as 1,000 GBP merit-based scholarships, sports scholarships and international scholarships.

As part of this scheme, first-year students at the University of Worcester received a fee waiver worth about 3,450 EUR (£3,000) for one year, which reduced the amount of tuition fees they had to pay. The programme was initiated by the British Government and administered through the universities to make it easier for students from low-income households to start their studies. The University of Worcester awarded 200 of these grants for the 2012/13 academic year.

Who could apply

• Study level: You were in your first year of study. Master’s students and students who had transferred directly from one degree programme to another were not eligible to take part.
• Financial need: Your household income was 25,000 GBP per year or less, as verified by Student Finance England. Grants were awarded strictly in descending order of income, meaning that meeting the income threshold alone was no guarantee of receiving a grant.
• Course cost: Your degree programme costs more than 6,000 GBP per year (or the equivalent part-time fee).
• Where you lived: Their usual place of residence was in England, not in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Not eligible: You were not eligible to apply if you were receiving financial support from the NHS or a teacher training organisation, if you had transferred from another institution, if you were studying part-time at a level of less than 25%, or if a sponsor was covering your fees.
• Extra consideration: Pupils who had been in care, as well as refugees, were given priority.
