The Sir Gerard Newman Scholarship

a total of about 2,300 EUR (£2,000) will be deducted from your tuition fees, spread over your three-year engineering degree at the University of Hertfordshire. The amount will be paid in three instalments: approximately 590 EUR (£500) in the first year, the same amount in the second year, and approximately 1,150 EUR (£1,000) in the final year. Each year, one student wins this prize, which is funded by the University’s School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science.

Who can apply

• University: You are studying at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield, UK.
• Field of study: You are studying for a Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, automotive engineering, civil engineering or mechanical engineering.
• Study phase: At the time of applying, you will be in your first year of study.
• Nationality and fees: You are a student from the UK or the EU and have ‘Home’ status (i.e. you pay the lower tuition fee rate for home students).

How to apply

You cannot apply on your own initiative. During the first year of study, the Faculty of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science invites eligible students to submit an application. Please check with the university for the exact application deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one student is selected each year, and they must be studying a specific engineering degree programme at that particular university as a ‘home fee’ student. This keeps the pool of eligible applicants small. Nevertheless, having just one winner each year means there is genuine competition amongst those who meet the criteria. If you meet the criteria and submit a compelling application upon invitation, your chances are good.
