About this scholarship

University of Sheffield Bursary Scheme

You will receive up to 1,150 EUR per year (up to £1,000) from the University of Sheffield. As this is a grant, you do not have to pay it back. The amount depends on your household income: If your income is £25,000 or less, you will receive £1,000 per year; if it is between £25,001 and £30,000, you will receive £500,; and if it is between £30,001 and £40,000, you will receive £250.. You will receive the grant for every year of your degree, including a year spent studying abroad. It is awarded in addition to a government student loan. If you live in one of the most deprived areas or in an under-represented part of the Sheffield region, you will receive a £250 top-up based on your postcode, bringing the maximum amount to £1,250 per year. You will not receive the grant for any year spent working in industry or on a work placement.

Who can apply

  • University: You are studying for a bachelor’s degree at the University of Sheffield.
  • Fee status: You pay the tuition fees applicable to UK students, not those for international students.
  • Field of study: Every subject, provided the degree programme receives funding for Bachelor’s students.
  • Household income: Your household earns £40,000 or less per year.
  • Student loan: You have applied to Student Finance England (or the relevant regional office) for an income-based loan, which involves a means test. Even if you do not wish to claim the money, you can still apply for a £0 loan so that your income can be assessed.
  • First degree: If this is your second degree, you may not be eligible.

How to apply

No separate application is required. The university will automatically assess your eligibility based on the income details you provided to Student Finance England and your UCAS details. If you meet the criteria, you will receive an email confirming this once you have started your course – usually by the end of October.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not an award granted on a competitive basis. There is no limit on the number of students eligible, and the means-tested portion is not means-tested. If your household income is £40,000 or less and you meet the loan conditions, you will receive the grant automatically. Your chances depend on whether you meet the income threshold, not on whether you outperform other applicants.
