About this scholarship

Benefit

You will receive a one-year scholarship worth about 1,441 EUR to study philosophy as a PhD student at University of Oxford. It runs for 12 months. The Faculty Board may extend it for one or more further years. Instead of a scholarship, the amount may also be paid out as a research or conference grant. The funds originate from a bequest by Professor Oswald Hanfling and are administered by the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Oxford. The fund promotes ‘philosophy of everyday language’, which uses everyday words and expressions to discuss philosophical questions. It also recognises philosophical texts written in clear prose without excessive technical jargon.

Eligibility

  • Level: You are a postgraduate student, i.e. a Master’s or PhD student.
  • Field of study: You’re studying philosophy.
  • University: You are studying at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Oxford.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Focus: Your work is in line with the Fund’s objectives: an interest in arguments derived from everyday language, and the writing of philosophical texts in clear prose.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a scholarship with a limited number of places available. You must already be enrolled as a PhD student in philosophy at Oxford, and admission to a place there is in itself highly competitive. Within this small group, the fund gives preference to those whose interests align with its focus on the philosophy of everyday language and clear writing style. If you are enrolled at the Faculty of Philosophy at Oxford and your research aligns with this focus, your chances are good, as there are only a few applicants competing for this scholarship. The Faculty Council decides each year on the allocation of funds and may, in some years, hold them back in order to fund more later on.
