About this scholarship
WU Vienna Merit Scholarship
For outstanding academic achievement during an academic year at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna), you will receive a one-off payment of at least 750 EUR. The award is presented by the university itself and recognises excellent grades in a standard degree programme. Please note that funding is limited, so meeting the criteria does not guarantee that you will receive the award.
Who can apply
- University: You are enrolled on a standard degree programme at WU Vienna.
- Level: You are studying for a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree.
- Grades and workload: In one academic year, you must achieve both a minimum number of credit points and a minimum grade point average. For most Master’s and PhD programmes, an average of 1.0 is required. In Bachelor’s programmes, up to 1.5 are permitted; in the Business Law programme, up to 1.7. Only examinations with a numerical mark (1, 2, 3, 4) count; examinations marked ‘pass/fail’ are not taken into account.
- Timing: The application deadline extends for the standard duration of your degree programme plus one additional semester. An extension to the deadline may be granted for reasons including, amongst others: illness, pregnancy, a disability of level 50% or higher, military or civilian service, or student involvement.
- Nationality: If you are a national of an EEA country or Switzerland, you may apply without providing any additional evidence. Non-EEA nationals, stateless persons and refugees may also apply, but must provide evidence that they are treated on an equal footing with Austrian students. Valid proof includes, for example, an EU long-term residence card or five years’ residence in Austria.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted online via WU Online Student Services (OSS). The application period begins in early October and ends on 16 October at 12:00 midday. Your application will only be considered submitted once you have received a confirmation email at your WU student email address.
How realistic are your chances?
The threshold mentioned here corresponds to the annual average of the best academic results, meaning that only the top students on each degree programme qualify. As funding is limited, achieving the minimum threshold does not guarantee funding. If your average significantly exceeds the threshold for your degree programme, your prospects are good. If your result is at the threshold, you will be competing against many other equally strong applicants.
