About this award / prize

The John B. O'Brien Annual Prize in History

You get a one-off prize of 250 EUR for the best exam result in a chosen history subject at University College Cork (UCC). The family of the late John B. O'Brien, who taught Economic History at UCC from 1970 to 1999, funds the prize each year in his memory.

Who can apply

  • University: You study at University College Cork as an undergraduate in the School of History.
  • Subject: You take Australian History. If no one reaches the required standard, the prize goes to the best result in Economic History, and failing that, in Irish local history.
  • Grades: Your exam paper (or an equivalent piece worth at least one module) reaches at least 2H1 standard. This means an upper second-class honours result, first division.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You do not need to apply. The prize is awarded automatically based on your exam results and handed out at the School of History's annual prize-giving ceremony.
