About this scholarship

Benefit

The Gaeltacht Scholarship is awarded to pupils who have an excellent command of the Irish language (Gaeilge) and have achieved good results in the ‘Leaving Certificate’, the state-set examination at the end of Irish secondary education. This is a national Irish programme which is not administered by the university itself. The Marino Institute of Education (MIE) in Dublin recognises this scholarship and admits scholarship holders onto its bachelor’s degree programmes. The MIE’s website does not specify a fixed amount for this scholarship.

Eligibility

  • Level: You can enrol on a Bachelor’s degree programme at the MIE via the CAO, the central application system for Irish higher education.
  • Irish language: You have a strong command of Irish, usually from attending a Gaeltacht secondary school or an Irish-language school (Gaelcholaiste).
  • Exam results: The award is based on your Leaving Certificate results.
  • Course: You are studying at the MIE. Suitable degree programmes include the Bachelor’s degree in Education (Primary) and the four-year, Irish-language B.Ed. for teaching in the Gaeltacht areas (Baitsileir san Oideachas Tri Mhean na Gaeilge).
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

Apply for your MIE course via the CAO system. Under this nationwide programme, the scholarship is awarded on the basis of your ‘Leaving Certificate’ results and your knowledge of the Irish language; the MIE then takes over.
