About this award / prize

The Pearson Medal

You receive a medal. In some years it comes with a book prize on top. The book prize is paid from invested money, so its value changes from year to year and may be nothing at all in a given year. University College Cork (UCC) awards the medal once a year in its College of Medicine and Health. It is named after Charles Yelverton Pearson, a former Professor of Surgery there. It goes to the student with the highest marks in Surgery (module CP5100) at the Final Medical Examination, as long as the Academic Council judges the overall standard high enough.

Who can win it

  • Where you study: You are a medical student at University College Cork and studied there for the three years immediately prior to your exams.
  • Subject: In the final medical examination, you achieve the top mark in surgery (Module CP5100).
  • Timing: You passed the Third University Examination in Medicine no more than three years before the summer of your Final Medical Examination. Time spent on a BSc (Hons) degree, or another non-medical programme approved by the School of Medicine, does not count towards that gap.
  • Exam conditions: You are sitting the full final medical examination and are taking each module for the first time.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

There is no application. UCC awards the medal automatically to the top-performing eligible student in Surgery at the Final Medical Examination.
