About this award / prize
The Charles Medal in Physiology
As the top student in the final examinations in Physiology at University College Cork (UCC), you will receive a gold medal. This is an award, not a cash payment. It recognises the best academic achievement of the year. The award has been presented every year since 1909. It is funded by a donation from John James Charles, a former professor of anatomy and physiology, and is presented during the Faculty of Medicine’s awards ceremony.
Who can apply
- No application needed: The medal is automatically awarded to the student with the highest overall mark in the fourth-year physiology exam. You do not need to submit anything.
- University: You’re studying at University College Cork.
- Programme and year: You are a fourth-year BSc (Physiology) student this academic year, or an intercalated BSc (Physiology) student (a medical student taking an extra year to earn a science degree).
- Grades: You achieve the highest overall mark in your fourth-year physiology modules and attain the ‘First-Class Honours’ level. If no student achieves this level, no medal will be awarded that year.
- Nationality: All nationalities welcome.
