About this award / prize

The James M. O'Donovan Medical Prize

You will receive a one-off prize of about 1,750 EUR, which is awarded once a year by University College Cork (UCC) to the best final-year medical student. The exact amount varies slightly from year to year, as the prize is funded by the investment income from an endowment fund. This award honours James M. O’Donovan, who served as Professor of Medicine at UCC from 1932 to 1957.

Who can apply

  • University: You are studying at UCC and were enrolled there for the three years immediately prior to the examination.
  • Field of study: You’re studying medicine and are in your final year.
  • Exam: You are sitting the full final medical examination and taking each subject for the first time.
  • Grades: You get the highest marks in Medicine (module CP5200), and the Academic Council confirms your result is strong enough.
  • Timing: You passed the Third University Examination in Medicine no more than three years before the summer of your final exam. Time spent on a BSc (Hons) or another non-medical programme approved by the School of Medicine does not count towards this limit.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

No separate application is required. You will receive the award automatically based on the results of your final medical examination.
