About this award / prize
The John A. Murphy Prize in Irish History
You receive a one-off cash prize of around 200 EUR plus a parchment (a printed certificate) for writing the best undergraduate dissertation in Irish history at University College Cork (UCC). The money comes from an investment fund, so the amount can vary slightly from year to year. The prize honours Professor John A. Murphy, who held UCC's Chair of Irish History until 1990.
Who can apply
- University: You study at University College Cork and are enrolled in its School of History.
- What you submit: You write a BA seminar dissertation (your final written research project) on a topic in Irish history.
- Grades: You get the highest mark of all such dissertations, and your mark reaches at least First Class Honours (the top grade band). If no one reaches that level, the prize is not awarded that year.
- Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
How to apply
There is no separate application. The prize is awarded automatically based on your dissertation mark. The winner is announced at UCC's annual prize-giving ceremony.
