About this award / prize

The O'Longan Memorial Prizes

You can win book prizes worth around 500 EUR in total each year for writing a piece in Irish. Submit a poem or a piece of prose of your own on a topic of your choice. If your entry demonstrates genuine literary merit, you will receive books as a prize. Each book bears a stamp in Irish, designating it as an award in memory of Mícheál Óg Ó Longáin, a poet from Cork (1766–1827). University College Cork (UCC) awards the prizes from a fund established in his honour in 1918. The jury may divide the total amount amongst several winners, meaning that the number of prizes and their value vary from year to year.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You are currently studying at UCC or graduated from UCC no more than two years ago.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Nationality: All nationalities welcome.
  • Your entry: You write an original piece in Irish, either poetry or prose, on a topic of your choice. It must be your own work, and you may be asked to prove this.
  • Repeat wins: You can only win the first prize once.

How to apply

You must submit your entry in Irish to UCC by 17 March (St Patrick’s Day) each year. The College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences will assess the entries, and its decision is final. If no entry meets the required standard, no prize will be awarded that year.
