About this award / prize

The Blayney Prize

You will receive a one-off cash prize of around 3,000 EUR. This is awarded each year to the top medical student at University College Cork (UCC). The money comes from a fund bequeathed by Lord Blayney, a renowned doctor, in 1874. As it is paid out of invested capital, the annual amount may vary; please therefore regard the 3,000 EUR as a guide only. It is one of the oldest prizes at UCC.

Who can apply

  • Degree and stage: You are in your final year of medical studies at UCC and will be sitting your final medical examination this summer.
  • Top result: You have achieved the highest total mark across all sections of this final examination.
  • Honours: You pass the final exam with honours.
  • Time at UCC: You studied at UCC for the three years immediately prior to the exam.
  • On schedule: The final examination must be taken within three years of passing the medical examination in the third year of study. A gap year spent studying for a BSc (Hons) or another non-medical degree programme approved by the College of Medicine and Health will not be taken into account when calculating this time limit.
  • First attempt: You are sitting each module of the final examination for the first time.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are enrolled at UCC.

How to apply

No application is required. The prize is automatically awarded to the eligible student with the best results in the final medical examination in the summer.
