About this award / prize

Prize of degree "Professor Giovanni Ragnotti"

The prize for the best final-year dissertation in Medicine and Surgery is a one-off prize of 2,388 EUR. After deduction of Italian tax amounting to 25%, approximately 1,791 euros are paid out. The University of Insubria in Italy awards the prize once a year to a single graduate; it is funded by the Ragnotti family.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You have completed the Master’s degree programme in Medicine and Surgery (Laurea Magistrale in Medicina e Chirurgia).
  • University: You completed your degree at the University of Insubria (Como/Varese, Italy).
  • Timing: You defended your doctoral thesis in the year specified in the current call for applications (2024 or 2025).
  • Thesis quality: Your dissertation is original and makes a new contribution to medical science. A panel of professors assesses all the submitted dissertations and selects the best one.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Please email your application form, your dissertation as a PDF file and a copy of your identity document to the university’s Student Administration Office. The application deadline is 15 March. The jury will review all entries submitted and may decide not to award the prize if none of the theses is deemed convincing enough.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize has a narrow scope: only graduates of the medical degree programme at a single Italian university are eligible to enter, and they may submit only one final thesis, meaning the pool of entrants is small. If your final thesis is truly original and makes a contribution to medical science, your chances are good. Furthermore, the jury is not obliged to award the prize, so an average thesis does not automatically win.
