Grants for theses on the Aosta Valley

You will receive a one-off payment for a dissertation on the Aosta Valley or a topic of regional interest. For a Master’s or specialisation thesis, you can receive up to 600 EUR; for a doctoral thesis, up to 1,000 EUR. The Aosta Valley Region (Regione Autonoma Valle d’Aosta, in north-western Italy) pays out the amount. The exact amount varies. The annual budget is divided amongst all eligible applicants; the more people who qualify, the less each individual receives, up to the maximum amounts stated above. If you obtain more than one qualifying qualification with a single thesis, you will only receive the highest amount in each case.

Who can apply

• Your degree: You have obtained a Master’s degree (Laurea Magistrale, also known as a single-cycle degree), a specialisation diploma or a research doctorate (PhD).
• Grades: To obtain an Italian Master’s degree or specialisation qualification, a minimum of 95 out of 110 is required. An equivalent foreign qualification is recognised without any grade requirements.
• Thesis topic: Your dissertation must focus on the Aosta Valley or a topic of regional interest that has a clear link to the region. This will be assessed by a committee.
• Where you live: You are living in the Aosta Valley at the time of applying.
• Field of study: Open to all disciplines.
• Financial need: No eligibility criteria. There is no income limit.

How to apply

You must submit your application form, your bound, printed thesis and a copy of your identity document in person or by courier to the Scholarship Office in Aosta. The deadline is 8 May at 12:00. A committee will then assess each thesis for its regional relevance and determine the final amount of the scholarship. You will be notified of the result by email.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is very specific: you must live in the Aosta Valley and have written a dissertation relating to the region, meaning that only a few people meet the eligibility criteria. Apart from the minimum grade requirement and the subject assessment, there is no merit-based selection process, so provided you meet these conditions, you should receive a grant. Please note, however, that the allocated budget is divided amongst all eligible applicants, so the actual amount paid out may be less than the maximum amounts.
