Rent grant for non-resident students in Bologna

You will receive a grant of up to 1,000 EUR towards your rent if you are studying at University of Bologna but live too far away to commute daily and are therefore renting a flat near the campus. The money comes from the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) and is paid out via the university. The grant may never exceed the rent you actually pay during 2026. The final amount will be confirmed as soon as the Ministry knows its budget and how many students meet the eligibility criteria.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled at the University of Bologna for 2025/2026.
• Level: Bachelor’s, single-cycle and Master’s degrees, PhDs (dottorato di ricerca) and technical colleges.
• Field of study: All subjects.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Living far away (fuori sede): The journey from your home to the campus by public transport takes more than 90 minutes. You rent a flat near your place of study under an officially registered tenancy agreement for at least 10 months.
• Financial need: Your ISEE, the Italian measure of family income and assets, is 20,000 EUR or less.
• No double funding: You will not receive any further accommodation grant for the same year, such as an ER.GO grant for students from outside the region.
• First qualification: You do not yet hold a qualification at the same level or a higher level than the one you are currently aiming for.

How to apply

You must apply online via ‘Studenti Online’ (studenti.unibo.it) by 24 July 2026, 3 p.m.. Please enclose the signed self-declaration form confirming your status as a non-resident; otherwise, your application will be rejected.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is aimed exclusively at students who actually live away from home in rented accommodation and whose income does not exceed a relatively low threshold; consequently, the eligible group is smaller than for open scholarships. If you clearly meet the ‘Fuori-Sede’ criteria and the ISEE upper limit of 20,000 EUR, and are not receiving any other housing allowance, your chances are good. The exact amount paid out depends on the Ministry’s budget, so even if you meet the criteria, the amount may be less than 1,000 EUR.
