Ernesto and Iole De Maggi Scholarship

You will receive a one-off payment of EUR 1,000 (gross, before deduction of any fees you may be required to pay) to support your studies at ‘La Sapienza’ University in Rome. For the 2025 round, the Fondazione Roma Sapienza is awarding 11 of these scholarships, which are funded from the estate of Ernesto De Maggi. Selection will be based on your research project for your final thesis and your academic performance.

Who can apply

• Parent's job: One of your parents works, or worked before retiring, at ‘La Sapienza’ University in Rome. This is the key requirement.
• Where you study: You are enrolled at ‘La Sapienza’ University in Rome in one of the 11 faculties, which range from architecture and engineering to medicine, law, economics and the humanities.
• Study level: In the academic year 2025–2026, you are enrolled on a two-year Master’s degree programme (laurea magistrale) or are in at least the third year of a single-cycle Master’s degree programme (a longer combined degree programme such as Medicine).
• Grades: Your average examination mark is at least 27 out of 30.
• In good standing: You have no outstanding tuition fees and no exams left to take in your study plan.
• Nationality: Open to Italian and foreign nationals, provided they are resident in Italy.
• Field of study: Open to all degree programmes in the eligible faculties.

How to apply

Apply online using the form provided. Log in with your Sapienza student account and upload your application and your examination certificate as PDF files. The application deadline is 20 November 2025. A selection panel will then assess applicants based on the quality of their thesis topic and their academic performance.

How realistic are your chances?

This award has very strict eligibility criteria. Only students whose parents work or have worked at Sapienza are eligible, and applicants must also have a grade point average of 27/30, meaning that the pool of eligible candidates is small. With 11 scholarships available for this limited group, someone who clearly meets the criteria and can present a compelling final dissertation has good prospects. A compelling research proposal is decisive for the ranking when applicants have the same grades.
