About this award / prize
Prize "Gianni Oberto"
For an outstanding final dissertation on Piedmontese culture, you will receive a cash prize of up to 1,200 EUR and a certificate. The best Master’s thesis will also be published. There are two categories. For a Master’s thesis (or the former four-year or single-cycle degree), the first prize is 1,200 EUR and the second prize is 1,000 EUR. For a Bachelor’s thesis, the first prize is 800 EUR. All amounts are stated before tax. The prize is sponsored by the “Centro Gianni Oberto”, an institution of the Piedmont Regional Council in Turin, which promotes the history, language and traditions of the Piedmont region.
Who can apply
- Degree: You have obtained a Bachelor’s, Master’s or a previous four-year or single-cycle degree in a subject within the humanities or literary studies.
- Where you studied: You obtained your degree from a university in the Italian region of Piedmont.
- Thesis topic: Your dissertation focuses on Italian literature in Piedmont, the Piedmontese language or the region’s minority languages, Piedmontese popular culture or Piedmontese theatre.
- Timing: You have completed your degree within the period specified for this year’s call for applications. For the 2019/2020 round, this period ran from 1 January 2015 to 30 September 2020.
- Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
- One category only: Please enter either the ‘Bachelor’ category or the ‘Master’ category, but not both.
How to apply
Please submit your thesis in hard copy and as a PDF file, together with a signed entry form and a copy of your ID. Send these by registered post or hand them in in person at the Biblioteca della Regione Piemonte in Turin. There is no entry fee. The closing date for entries is 30 October. A panel of experts will then assess the entries and select the winners.
How realistic are your chances?
The selection criteria for this prize are very specific: your dissertation must be a humanities thesis on a specific Piedmontese topic, written at a Piedmontese university, meaning that very few people meet the requirements. If your dissertation fits one of the four themes and was completed within the specified timeframe, your chances are good. There are only one or two prizes in each category, and the quality of the dissertation is the deciding factor.
