INdAM scholarship for starting a Master's in mathematics

Once you have enrolled in the first year of a Master’s degree programme in Mathematics at any Italian university, you will receive a one-off payment of EUR 2,500 (gross). In addition, you can claim up to 1,000 euros towards travel, accommodation and subsistence costs when attending conferences or undertaking study and research trips for your Master’s thesis. If you complete your degree with very good marks, you may be eligible for a graduation award of up to 2,000 euros. To be eligible, you must have a credit-weighted average of at least 27/30, no mark below 24/30, have passed your first-year examinations on time, and have completed your degree on schedule. You will also join an INdAM research group of your choice. The funding is provided by the Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica “Francesco Severi” (INdAM), which awards 12 national scholarships as well as 6 additional scholarships funded by the University of Pisa.

Who can apply

• Your plan: You are starting the first year of a Master’s degree programme in Mathematics (Laurea Magistrale, programme code LM-40).
• Where you study: You enrol at any Italian university.
• Enrolment deadline: To receive the funding, you must enrol on a Master’s degree programme in mathematics for the first time by 31 March of the following year.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply, and there is no income limit.
• Extra Pisa scholarships: A further six scholarships will be awarded to eligible applicants who, although not selected, enrol at the University of Pisa. At least three of these will be awarded primarily to women.

How to apply

Apply via the INdAM online form and submit your academic CV: a list of your examinations, credit points and marks. Your university lecturers will submit their letters of recommendation directly. A selection committee will first review your application documents. Shortlisted candidates will then sit a written mathematics examination, and the final ranking will determine who receives a scholarship. The application deadline is 27 June.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is very strictly defined: only students who are starting a Master’s degree in mathematics in Italy are eligible to apply, and applicants must pass a written mathematics examination. This limits the pool of candidates to particularly gifted mathematics graduates. With 12 national scholarships and 6 places at the University of Pisa each year, the prospects for well-prepared applicants are quite good, and as past examination papers are published, it is possible to practise. The selection process rewards solid academic performance and good examination results, rather than a perfectly polished application.
