About this scholarship
INdAM scholarship for a maths degree
You will receive 4,000 EUR per year to commence a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics (programme L-35) at an Italian university. The scholarship is valid for 12 months. You may extend it for the standard three years of study, bringing the total amount to up to 12,000 EUR. To extend the scholarship, you must pass all examinations by 31 December each year with a weighted average mark of at least 27 out of 30, with no single mark lower than 24 out of 30. INdAM, Italy’s National Institute for Advanced Mathematics, funds 15 of these scholarships each year. You may not combine it with other scholarships, including free accommodation or meals provided by a student social organisation, except in certain cases involving study abroad.
Who can apply
- School diploma: You completed your upper secondary education (the Italian ‘Maturità’) in the academic year immediately prior to your enrolment.
- Degree: You are enrolling for the first time on the first year of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Mathematics (intake L-35).
- University: You are studying at an Italian university which, as at the cut-off date, is home to an active INdAM research unit.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Age: No age restriction. If you are younger than 18 on the closing date, a parent or guardian must submit the application on your behalf.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted online via the INdAM platform by 9 September 2026 at 16:00. You will then sit a written mathematics exam covering upper secondary school topics (logic, algebra, geometry, functions). You can sit this test at any participating university, regardless of which university you wish to study at. The 15 highest-scoring candidates on the national ranking list will be awarded the scholarships.
How realistic are your chances?
Every year, only 15 scholarships are awarded across Italy, and winners are selected solely on the basis of a written maths exam. Competition is fierce, and what counts is a strong performance in the exam. If maths is your strong point, the past examination papers published by INdAM will give you a real advantage. As there is no interview and no subjective assessment, a well-prepared applicant knows exactly what to focus on.
