UCLan's Harris Bursary Fund

You will receive a credit balance in a personal online account, the ‘Student Wallet’, to cover the cost of what you need for your studies. You can spend it in the university’s online shop on textbooks, computer equipment such as laptops, and food. This is a credit balance, not cash that you can withdraw. The amount depends on your circumstances and is not disclosed. The University of Lancashire (formerly the University of Central Lancashire, UCLan) manages the fund, which is financed by donations. Your credit will be transferred each year until you graduate, and you will then have three months to spend any remaining balance.

Who can apply

• University: You are studying at the University of Lancashire (UCLan) in the United Kingdom.
• Field of study: Any course is permitted.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Financial need: The fund is aimed at students in financial or social hardship, particularly those from low-income households.

How to apply

You do not usually need to apply for the book, technology and meals allowances. The university automatically identifies eligible students and will notify you by email as soon as your ‘Student Wallet’ account has been set up. Under ‘Services for Students’ in your MyUCLan account, you can check which benefits you are eligible for. For general support in financial emergencies, please contact the Student Support Team at the Student Support Centre on the main campus. There is no deadline; the fund is available throughout the year.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a means-tested grant for students who are already enrolled; it is therefore not a competition that you win on the basis of your grades. If you are studying at the University of Lancashire and can demonstrate genuine financial hardship, you have a real chance of receiving support. As the funds come from donations, the amount of support you receive will depend on the funds available.
