Arts & Humanities Doctoral Landscape Award (University of Glasgow)

You get a fully funded PhD place at the University of Glasgow's College of Arts & Humanities. This covers your full tuition fees plus a yearly living allowance (stipend, money to live on) at the UK research council standard rate. That is currently about EUR 25,000 per year (£21,383), rising to £21,805 for 2026-27. You also get a Research Training Support Grant to cover research costs. Funding runs for at least 42 months (3.5 years) full time, or 84 months part time. You can add up to 6 extra months for internships, artist residencies, research trips or other training. International students do not pay the higher fee, because the College waives the difference between the Home and International tuition rate. Beyond the money you join a structured training programme with cohort events (group activities with fellow PhD students), specialised subject training and knowledge-exchange activities across seven Scottish universities. The award is run with the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are applying for a PhD (doctorate). You normally hold or are finishing a Master's, or you have substantial relevant work experience instead.
• New applicant: You are a new PhD applicant at Glasgow. If you are already enrolled on a PhD, you cannot apply.
• Field of study: Your subject falls within the AHRC's arts and humanities areas, for example history, philosophy, classics, archaeology, English literature, creative writing, music, film and TV studies, history of art, modern languages, translation studies or theology.
• Nationality: Anyone from anywhere in the world can apply, both UK and international.
• Study form: Full time or part time. Distance learning is not allowed, so you must live close enough to Glasgow to travel in daily.
• No double funding: You do not already hold another full scholarship for 2026-27.

How to apply

First contact a potential supervisor at Glasgow to discuss your research idea. Then submit two applications by the deadline: an admissions application through the university's online system, and a separate scholarship application through the scholarships portal. The deadline for the 2026 round (October 2026 start) was midday on 28 November 2025. Applications are assessed anonymously, mainly on the quality of your research proposal.

How realistic are your chances?

This fully funded PhD is open worldwide, so the field is large and the research proposal carries the most weight. Your prospects depend on a strong, original proposal and a supervisor who backs your project, so contact a potential supervisor early. If you come from a widening-participation background, you can request a reweighting that puts even more emphasis on the proposal.
