York Bursary

For each year of your Bachelor’s degree, you will receive about 1,160 EUR (£1,000) per year as a grant, which you will never have to repay. In the first year, the amount will either be offset against your university accommodation costs or paid directly into your bank account. From the second year onwards, you can choose whether to receive the amount in cash or as a credit against your accommodation costs. The payment is made in three instalments in October, January and April. The University of York funds the scholarship partly through donations from former students. If you are awarded the scholarship, you can also take part in the optional ‘On Track’ programme, which offers career workshops, one-to-one coaching and professional networking opportunities.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are undertaking a full-time Bachelor’s degree programme, including integrated Master’s programmes and programmes with a foundation year.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Fee status: You have ‘UK Home’ status and pay tuition fees for the whole year (currently £9,535,, although these amounts may increase annually).
• Where you study: At the University of York.
• Financial need: Your household income is below £35,000.. This refers to the combined income of your parents, your legal guardian or the partner you live with, after deduction of the specified allowances.
• Means-tested application: You have submitted an application to a UK student finance organisation, your household income has been assessed, and you have agreed that this information may be passed on to the university.
• Not eligible: Students on work placements or studying abroad for a year, PGCE students, students on dual-track degree programmes, students from the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, and students on leave of absence.

How to apply

No separate application is required. The university will automatically check your eligibility based on the income details provided by your UK student finance provider. To receive the full amount, please ensure that your student finance application has been fully processed by the end of December. After that date, only a partial amount will be paid out.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competition. It is a guaranteed grant for anyone who meets the criteria. If you are studying full-time at York University, have ‘Home fee’ status and your household income is below £35,000,, you will receive this grant. The biggest risk is missing out on the full amount. You should therefore complete your application for student finance and have your income assessed as early as possible. Your chances depend on whether you meet the income threshold, not on outperforming other applicants.
