About this award / prize

What you get

For outstanding achievement in economics at the University of Oxford, you will receive a one-off cash prize of about 120 EUR (approximately 100 GBP). This is a one-off award for the best performance in one of three areas of economics in your final examinations. It is not a monthly scholarship. Should two students achieve the highest mark, the prize may be shared between them. The exact amount is determined each year by the Board of Trustees of the Sir John Hicks Foundation, an Oxford-based charity which funds the prize.

Who can apply

  • University: You are an undergraduate student at the University of Oxford.
  • Degree: You are studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) or History and Economics (H&E).
  • Results: You achieved your best result of the year in one of the three examination areas – microeconomics, macroeconomics or quantitative economics.
  • Nationality: Any nationality is welcome. What counts is your performance in the exam, not your background.

How to apply

No application is required. Examiners at the University of Oxford award the prize automatically, based on your final examination results, in collaboration with the Sir John Hicks Foundation. The Department of Economics announces the winners after the final examinations, usually in August.

How realistic are your chances?

This is an award for outstanding achievement rather than an open competition, so it is not possible to prepare for it specifically. The award is given to the student with the best result in each economics subject area from among all those sitting their final examinations in PPE or H&E that year. If you are aiming to be top of your year in microeconomics, macroeconomics or quantitative economics, this is certainly achievable. However, the prize rewards your examination results and not an application you submit.
