About this award / prize

William Coldstream Prize

For outstanding achievement in your final year in Fine Art, you will receive a one-off cash prize of about 1,150 EUR (£1,000). This is an acquisition prize: the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London (UCL) will acquire one of your works, and the cash prize will be awarded to you. The prize is awarded once a year in June.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are already enrolled at the Slade School of Fine Art at UCL in London.
  • Degree: You are enrolled on the BA or BFA degree programme in ‘Fine Art’. As these are Bachelor’s degree programmes, Master’s students are not eligible to apply.
  • Study year: You’re in your final year of study.
  • Merit: Your art is remarkable for its quality.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. Slade tutors nominate students in their final year, and the prize is awarded as part of the regular course of study.

How realistic are your chances?

This is an individual award presented to a fine arts student in their final year at a university; the pool of candidates is therefore small, but the bar is set high. You cannot nominate yourself; the winners are selected by the lecturers who are familiar with your work. Only by producing consistently strong work throughout your final year will you stand a chance of winning the prize.
