Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship (University of Bristol)

You will receive about 1,810 EUR (1,552 GBP) for one year, which will be paid in three instalments in October, January and April. This grant is awarded by the University of Bristol. It is not means-tested nor linked to your other sources of funding for your studies. You may receive it again in subsequent years – up to three times during your degree – provided you continue to achieve outstanding academic results. Music scholarship holders receive part of the funding for regular instrumental or vocal tuition, the organisation of which is supported by the Faculty of Music.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You have applied for a full-time degree programme at the University of Bristol or are already enrolled there.
• Level: Open to Bachelor’s students and students on part-time Master’s programmes. Not open to PhD students, students on research-oriented Master’s programmes or participants in preparatory courses. Students on Master’s programmes are not eligible to apply for the theatre prize.
• Talent: You must have outstanding abilities in theatre, music or sport. In music, you must have achieved at least level 8 (ABRSM or equivalent) as well as further awards. In theatre, you must have a long-term, serious commitment to the field. In sport, you must have a clear path towards the Commonwealth or Olympic level, or towards a professional career, usually with international honours at junior or senior level.
• Field of study: Open to all disciplines. Your talent does not necessarily have to relate to your degree programme, so you could, for example, receive a music scholarship whilst studying engineering.
• Nationality: Open to students from the UK, the EU and other countries.
• Other funding: Applicants from the sports sector must not be in receipt of any other state-funded sports scholarship.
• Timing: You must spend the entire scholarship year in Bristol. You cannot apply if you are planning a year abroad, a work placement or a temporary transfer, or if Bristol is merely your ‘safety choice’ on your UCAS application.

How to apply

You should apply via the online form and provide the contact details of a referee. The application deadline is 1 March. Shortlisted applicants in the music stream must submit a performance video; Applicants in the field of sport will be invited to an interview in Bristol in around April; in the field of theatre, selection is based solely on the application documents. You will be notified of the result by 30 April.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is aimed at a specific target group: exclusively at individuals with truly exceptional talent in the fields of theatre, music or sport, as demonstrated by concrete evidence such as a grade of 8, national awards or participation in the Olympic development programme. As a result, the pool of applicants is smaller than for open scholarships, but the requirements are high. If your achievements clearly fall into one of these three categories and you apply by the deadline, your chances are good.
