What the Wardlaw Scholarship gives you

You will receive up to about 5,100 EUR per year (up to £4,400) to cover your living costs whilst studying for your bachelor’s degree at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. The money can also be used to cover your accommodation costs at the university. It will be paid directly into your bank account in ten monthly instalments from September to May. The funding covers the entire duration of your studies and is renewed each year subject to your academic progress. The scholarship is funded by donations from alumni (former students) and supporters of the university.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are starting a Bachelor’s degree at the University of St Andrews.
• Where you live: You live in Scotland or elsewhere in the United Kingdom (England, Wales or Northern Ireland).
• When you apply: As a prospective student, you apply before you start your degree. You do not need to be admitted yet.
• Field of study: Most degree subjects are eligible, but you must be studying at one of the eligible faculties, such as the natural sciences, the humanities, medicine, economics, computer science or modern languages.
• Study mode: Both full-time and part-time (daytime) study programmes are available.
• Financial need: You must provide evidence that you are unable to afford the costs of your studies without difficulty. To do so, you must submit proof of your household income.

How to apply

You can apply using the ‘St Andrews Access Award’ form on the university’s application portal once you have submitted your application to study. The deadline for the 2026 intake was 15 April. Late applications will not be considered; please therefore check the current deadlines before you begin your application.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed at students resident in the United Kingdom who can demonstrate a need for financial support and wish to study at a specific university, which narrows the pool of applicants compared with open scholarships. If you clearly meet the criteria regarding residence and financial need and can provide clear evidence of your household income, your chances are good. The selection process focuses primarily on financial hardship, so a clear, well-documented application is more important than a polished one. Apply early.
