About this grant / loan
Participation Grant (University of Sheffield)
You will receive a one-off payment of up to about 173 EUR (£150) to enable you to take part in student societies and activities at the University of Sheffield. This covers membership fees, sports kit, equipment and travel costs for teams and clubs organised by the Students’ Union and Sport Sheffield. This is a grant, not a loan, so you will never have to repay the amount.
Who can apply
- University: You are currently enrolled at the University of Sheffield.
- Level: Both Bachelor’s and Master’s students are eligible to apply.
- Field of study: Open to all subjects.
- Financial need (undergraduates): You are eligible for the University of Sheffield’s scholarship programme. To be eligible, your household income must be £40,000 or less, and you must have a loan to cover your tuition fees and a loan to cover your living costs, granted by Student Finance England or an equivalent regional body.
- Financial need (postgraduates): You received a maintenance grant during your bachelor’s degree. If you started your degree after August 2016, your household income is £40,000 or less.
- Home student status: You are a domestic fee-paying student, as the funding is based on UK student finance.
How to apply
You should apply online via the university’s ‘Student Hub’ once your eligibility for the scholarship has been confirmed. The university will notify eligible students by email by the start of November, and you can submit your application at any time during the academic year.
How realistic are your chances?
This funding is very restricted. You must already be a student at Sheffield and meet the eligibility criteria for a scholarship for students on low incomes, so the number of people eligible is limited. If you meet these criteria and are a member of a club or society, your chances are good. The amount is small and covers certain participation costs, but not your tuition fees.
