Benefit

This grant adds a monthly top-up to an existing Austrian student grant (Studienbeihilfe) while you study abroad. The amount depends on where you go: EUR 450 per month for most destinations, including Western and Northern Europe, Switzerland, and all countries outside Europe, or EUR 250 per month for most Central and Eastern European countries (for example Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Spain, among others). If you receive only the basic grant level, you get an extra EUR 180 on top. You can receive this for up to 20 months in total, with a minimum of one month. The grant is issued by the Austrian Student Aid Authority (Studienbeihilfenbehörde).

You can also claim a one-off travel supplement of EUR 56 to EUR 1,735 depending on distance, and up to EUR 365 towards a language course taken immediately before your stay. If you also receive an Erasmus+ grant, both are paid alongside each other.

Eligibility

• Austrian grant first: You must already hold an approved Austrian domestic student grant (Studienbeihilfe). This is a top-up, not a standalone award.
• Study phase: You must be in at least your third bachelor's semester.
• Type of stay: You are completing one or more full semesters abroad as part of your Austrian degree. Internships are not covered, except for the clinical-practical year in human medicine.
• Home institution: You study at a university, university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule), university of education (Pädagogische Hochschule), accredited private university, or theological college in Austria. Students at conservatories are not eligible.
• Nationality and residence: Austrian citizens, EEA citizens with permanent residence or employment ties to Austria, non-EEA citizens with permanent residence or as family members of EU or Austrian nationals, recognised refugees, and UK citizens resident in an EU country before 1 January 2021.
• Age: You must have started your studies before turning 33. Exceptions apply for self-supporting students, students with children, and students with disabilities.
• Academic progress: You must meet the general progress requirements of the Austrian grant system and show at least 3 ECTS credits per month abroad after returning.
• Field and destination: Open to all subjects and all countries.

How to apply

Apply to the regional Student Aid Office (Stipendienstelle) responsible for your Austrian institution, either online using ID Austria (Austria's digital identity system) or by submitting a paper form by post or in person. Submit your application no later than three months after your stay abroad begins. Late applications are rejected without exception.
