About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive a fully funded place on a six-week summer school at Shanghai University of International Studies (SISU) in China, as well as a travel allowance of 175 EUR from the University of Alcalá (UAH) in Spain. SISU will cover the costs of your stay. This includes your course fees, teaching materials, a twin room on campus, guided excursions and health insurance for international students in China. You will receive approximately 20 hours of Chinese lessons per week, which will be tailored to your level following a placement test. You can also look forward to cultural courses (calligraphy, paper-cutting, Taiji), lectures on Chinese history and economics, and guided tours of Shanghai. Only one scholarship is awarded per year.

Who can apply

  • University: You are enrolled at the University of Alcalá (UAH) in Spain.
  • Level: You are enrolled on an officially recognised degree programme (Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD).
  • English: You hold an official certificate attesting to your proficiency in English.
  • Chinese: You do not need to know Chinese, but an official certificate will give you extra points in the selection process.
  • Grades: Your weighted average mark carries the greatest weight in the assessment, so good results are to your advantage.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are enrolled at the UAH.

How to apply

Please submit your application to the UAH International Relations Office, either at the general registry office or online. The application deadline is 26 May. A selection panel will assess applicants on the basis of their grade point average, their English and Chinese language certificates, and a letter of recommendation, awarding a total of 18 points.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one scholarship is awarded each year, and it is available exclusively to students who are already enrolled at the UAH. The pool of applicants is small, but as there is only one place available, competition is fierce. Academic results carry the most weight, so a high grade point average is your strongest selling point, and an official Chinese language certificate can be the deciding factor in a close call. If you meet the UAH’s requirements and have a solid academic record as well as certified English language skills, your prospects are good.
