Radboud Max Planck Internship Grant

You get 630 EUR per month for an internship at a European Max Planck Institute, a research centre in the life sciences, natural sciences, or social and human sciences located in various European cities. The internship lasts 6 months to 1 year. In exceptional cases, and only if everyone agrees, the minimum can drop to 4 months. The 630 EUR combines two grants: a basic Erasmus+ traineeship grant (funding from the EU for a work placement abroad) plus this Radboud Max Planck top-up, which is added automatically. Your exact monthly figure depends on the number of days you spend abroad, counting 30 days per month. The programme is run by Radboud University in Nijmegen together with the Max Planck Institutes.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are a Master's student at Radboud University in one of the eligible programmes. These include Artificial Intelligence, Biology, Chemistry, Physics & Astronomy, Mathematics, Cognitive Neuroscience, Behavioural Science, Philosophy, Biomedical Sciences and several others.
• Where you go: Any European Max Planck Institute. You can also intern at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, but that placement gets no funding from either grant.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply, as long as you are enrolled in an eligible Radboud Master's programme.

How to apply

There is no fixed deadline. You can apply all year round, but start at least 6 months before you plan to leave. First contact the named contact person for your Master's programme to express your interest. Then work out an internship proposal with your supervisors. Once the Max Planck Institute accepts you, you apply for the Erasmus+ grant through the Faculty International Office, and the Max Planck top-up is added automatically.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is aimed at a small group: you must already be a Master's student in one of the listed Radboud programmes and be accepted for an internship at a Max Planck Institute. If you fit those conditions and line up a placement early, your prospects are good, since the grant tops up automatically once your Erasmus+ traineeship is approved. The main hurdle is securing the internship itself, not the funding.
