About this scholarship

What You Get

The Becas de Excelencia del Gobierno de México para Extranjeros (Mexican Government Excellence Scholarships for Foreigners) gives international students a monthly living allowance to study full-time at one of 90 Mexican universities. The scholarship lasts up to 12 months for undergraduate and master's mobility programmes, up to 24 months for a full master's degree, and 6-12 months for doctoral or postdoctoral research stays.

The package includes:

  • Monthly stipend: ~14,265 MXN for undergraduate/master's students; ~17,831 MXN for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers (amounts are tied to Mexico's Unit of Measurement and Update - a legally set index - and may change)
  • Tuition and enrolment fees paid directly to your Mexican university
  • Health insurance through Mexico's Social Security Institute (IMSS), starting from the 7th month of your scholarship
  • Exemption from Mexican visa fees
  • International flight home (economy class) on successful completion, for students from eligible countries
  • Domestic transport between Mexico City and your host institution if you study outside the capital

Note: this scholarship does not cover programmes where you only write a thesis or dissertation to earn a degree - you must be enrolled in a full teaching programme.

Who Can Apply

The scholarship is open to nationals of more than 170 countries. You must be able to answer yes to all of the following:

  • Age: You are at least 18 years old at the time of application
  • Residence: You currently live in your home country (not in Mexico)
  • Language: Your native language is Spanish, OR you hold a Spanish language certificate at B2 level or higher (B2 means you can hold a conversation and understand academic texts in Spanish)
  • No current Mexican government scholarship: You are not currently receiving any scholarship from a Mexican government body
  • No recent Mexican government scholarship: You did not receive a federal Mexican government scholarship in the year immediately before applying
  • Previous AMEXCID scholarship: If you received an AMEXCID scholarship before, at least as many months have passed since it ended as the scholarship lasted
  • Completed any previous AMEXCID scholarship: You successfully finished any AMEXCID scholarship you previously held

How to Apply

All applications are submitted online, in Spanish, through the SIGCA portal (sigca.sre.gob.mx). You may only submit one application - duplicate submissions are automatically disqualified.

For the 2026 cycle, the application window ran from 21 May to 22 June 2026. Selected candidates were notified by email between 6 and 10 July 2026. Scholarships began between August and 10 November 2026.

Selection is based on: completeness of your application, your home country's quota, academic excellence, whether you have previously held an AMEXCID scholarship (preference goes to first-timers), and order of submission - so applying early matters.

You will typically need to submit:

  • A copy of your valid passport
  • A signed declaration letter (official template)
  • A CV of up to 4 pages (official template)
  • A medical certificate (issued within the last 3 months)
  • A Spanish language certificate at B2 or above (if Spanish is not your native language)
  • An acceptance letter from your chosen Mexican university (issued within the last 60 days), plus academic transcripts and diplomas, depending on the scholarship type
