About this scholarship
What you get
IBRO Travel Grants cover travel costs for neuroscience conferences and meetings worldwide. The amount varies by event: some grants reach USD 2,500 (for example, the FENS Forum and the T21RS Conference), while others range from USD 300 to 1,000. The International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) runs the programme with its member societies. New grants open throughout the year as conferences are announced.
Payment follows an 80:20 split: 80% is transferred up to two months before the event, and the remaining 20% is paid after you submit a short final report.
Who can apply
- Career stage: Primarily early-career researchers in neuroscience. Career breaks - parental leave, caring responsibilities or military service - are taken into account during assessment.
- Nationality: Any nationality. Eligibility is based on your country of residence, not your passport.
- Region: Each grant states who it is open to. Some are global; others are limited to one IBRO region (Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Pan-Europe or US/Canada).
- Priority: Applicants from underrepresented backgrounds - by gender, geography, socioeconomic status or disability - are prioritised in selection. This is a preference, not a hard requirement.
- Membership: No IBRO membership needed. A free account on the IBRO Grants Portal is sufficient.
- Restrictions: Residents of North Korea, Venezuela and Crimea cannot apply. Residents of Iran, Cuba and Belarus may apply but require US Treasury (OFAC) approval, which can take over 12 months.
How to apply
Create a free account at ibro.smapply.org, then find the grant for your target conference via the funding calendar at ibro.org/grants-calendar/. Each grant has its own deadline tied to the event date, so check the calendar regularly. Reviewers assess applications within roughly six weeks of the deadline. Unsuccessful applicants do not receive individual feedback.
