What you get

For your compulsory period of study or work placement abroad, you will receive 350 EUR per month. This is limited to 10 months per academic year, or up to 12 months if a compulsory summer work placement is included. PhD students on a PhD track programme will receive 700 EUR per month for up to 18 months over the entire duration of their doctoral studies; for programmes with a special status, the amount may be up to 1,300 euros per month. The funding comes from the Franco-German University (DFH / Université Franco-Allemande) in Saarbrücken, which offers joint German-French degree programmes. You can combine this funding with other scholarships or with German student finance (BAföG) whilst studying abroad.

Who can apply

• Programme: You are enrolled on a Franco-German degree programme (Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD) funded by the DFH. Programmes in the introductory year are not eligible.
• Registration: You are enrolled at the DFH and at your home university in Germany or France for the current academic year.
• Where you go: You are completing your compulsory period abroad – whether it is a study placement or a compulsory work placement – in a partner country (Germany or France) or in a third country.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. From 2024/2025, students from third countries who are enrolled on trinational degree programmes are also eligible to apply, provided they have chosen a German or French higher education institution as their home university and are currently resident in Germany or France.
• TIME students: Students from the ‘Top Industrial Managers for Europe’ (TIME) network are also eligible to take part, provided they meet the above requirements.

If you split your stay abroad (for example, one semester instead of two), you will only receive half the monthly amount (175 EUR). For cross-border programmes where the partner universities are less than 100 km apart, the full rate will only be paid if you can prove that you are living in the partner country. Otherwise, a reduced flat-rate allowance applies.

How to apply

You apply directly via the DFH application form in the relevant section. Your programme coordinator will then confirm the applications of all students on the programme. Please check with them to see whether your application for the relevant year has been confirmed.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is linked to a specific dual degree programme funded by the DFH, meaning that only students already enrolled on these programmes can apply – not the general public. If you are enrolled on one of these degree programmes and are undertaking your compulsory period of study abroad, you clearly meet the criteria and have a good chance of success. A specific number of scholarships are available each year for each degree programme; therefore, please ensure that your coordinator submits your application in good time.
