The US Friends of Chalmers Scholarship

You will receive full tuition fee waiver: 100% of your tuition fees for a Master’s programme at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. The funding is valid for up to two years, i.e. the entire duration of your studies. For students from non-EU countries, tuition fees amount to approximately 175,000 SEK per year (approximately 15,500 EUR), totalling around 350,000 SEK (approximately 31,000 EUR) over the two years. The funding comes from ‘US Friends of Chalmers’, a group that promotes links between Chalmers University of Technology and US universities, research institutions and industry. The scholarship is awarded by Chalmers University of Technology itself. Your family’s income is not a factor, and receiving other forms of financial support does not disqualify you from applying.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a citizen of the United States.
• Fee status: You pay tuition fees to study in Sweden, which means you are not an EU/EEA citizen.
• Study level: You are applying for the first year of a Master’s programme at Chalmers. If you are already studying at Chalmers, you cannot apply.
• Field of study: You are applying for a Master’s degree programme in engineering. The programmes ‘Architecture and Urban Planning’ and ‘Architecture and Planning Beyond Sustainability’ are excluded from this.
• Grades: You have a weighted average mark of at least 80%.
• First choice: You are listing a degree programme at Chalmers University of Technology as your first choice.

How to apply

First, apply for a Master’s programme via universityadmissions.se during the application period (from 16 October 2026 to 15 January 2027). You must then apply for the scholarship separately via the Chalmers scholarship portal, quoting your 8-digit application number. The deadline for scholarship applications is 15 January. You will receive the result by email between mid-March and the end of April.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very restricted. Only US citizens who pay tuition fees and are commencing a Master’s degree in engineering at this specific university are eligible to apply, so the pool of eligible candidates is small. If you clearly meet the grade threshold of 80% and list a programme at Chalmers University as your first choice, your chances are good. Selection is based on academic merit rather than financial need, so an outstanding academic record is crucial.
