About this scholarship

Anders Chydenius Scholarship

You will receive grant of 1,000 EUR for the completion of your Master’s thesis. The amount will be paid in two instalments: 500 EUR as soon as you have received notification of acceptance, and the remaining 500 EUR once your university has accepted the completed thesis. The scholarship is provided by the Anders Chydenius Foundation in Kokkola, Finland. The Foundation supports research related to the ideas of Anders Chydenius: free trade, freedom of expression, human rights and transparent governance.

Who can apply

  • Level: You’re currently writing your Master’s thesis.
  • Topic: Your dissertation should focus either on the history of Anders Chydenius and his era, or on a contemporary topic that was close to his heart. Preference will be given to dissertations on the themes of freedom and responsibility in the market economy, transparent governance or freedom of information.
  • Field of study: Any subject, as long as your topic fits the themes above.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • University: You can study at any university.

How to apply

Please submit an informal application to the Foundation by post or email. Please enclose a research proposal of between 2 and 4 pages, as well as a letter from your supervisor. The Foundation decides on the allocation of grants twice a year, in June and December.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is subject to one condition: the topic of your final dissertation must be related to Chydenius’s areas of interest. As a result, the pool of applicants is smaller than for open funding schemes for final dissertations. If your topic clearly fits this criteria – particularly theses on the market economy, transparent governance or freedom of information – your chances are good. A concise research proposal that clearly illustrates the link to these topics will set you apart from other applicants.
