What the Oxford Wolfson Marriott Graduate Scholarship gives you

You will be awarded a full PhD funding package at the University of Oxford. Your tuition fees will be charged at the rate applicable to British nationals or citizens of the Republic of Ireland, and you will also receive a monthly living allowance. The living allowance (scholarship) is equivalent to the UK minimum amount for PhD students. Between 2025 and 26, this amounted to 20,780 GBP per year, which is equivalent to approximately 1,990 EUR per month. The funding is awarded for the entire duration during which you are liable to pay tuition fees as part of your agreed PhD programme, typically up to four years for a PhD. If you are studying part-time, you will receive a pro-rata study grant instead. The funding is provided by Wolfson College, financed by a donation from the late Dr Francis Marriott, a College Fellow and lecturer in statistics, and is supplemented by a corresponding university fund.

Who can apply

• Level: You are applying for a DPhil (the University of Oxford’s term for a PhD, i.e. a research doctorate), not for a Master’s programme or a taught degree programme.
• Subject: Your PhD project falls within one of the funded areas for 2026–27: interdisciplinary life and environmental sciences, oncology, solid-state physics or mathematics. A separate version at the Business School applies to PhD projects in the fields of management and finance.
• College: This award can only be made to students at Wolfson College. If two candidates are equally qualified, preference will be given to the one who has listed Wolfson College as their first choice.
• Nationality: The prizes in the fields of natural sciences and mathematics are open to applicants of all nationalities. The prize for management and finance is reserved exclusively for individuals who are ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland.
• Selection: Selection is based on your academic achievements and your research potential.

How to apply

There is no separate scholarship application form. Apply for your chosen PhD programme via the standard application process for postgraduate programmes at the University of Oxford; your application will then be automatically considered. Submit your application by the relevant deadline for your programme in December or January. For many programmes, the application deadline in January is 24 January.

How realistic are your chances?

Only a handful of these scholarships are awarded each year – one per department – and PhD places at Oxford are highly competitive. The selection process is therefore highly competitive. Your chances depend on truly outstanding academic achievements and a compelling research proposal in one of the specified subject areas. If you list Wolfson as your first-choice college, this will give you the decisive edge over other applicants of equal merit.
