About this scholarship

What the Erasmus grant at ESAP gives you

You will receive a grant of monthly Erasmus+ grant to study for a semester or a full academic year at a partner university abroad. The amount is based on the standard Erasmus+ rates and depends on your destination and your home country. The info box contains details on 500 EUR for your reference. The grant is administered by ESAP (Escola Superior Artística do Porto), an art college in Porto, Portugal, which has more than 60 exchange agreements across Europe. If you study at ESAP, you will also receive a free 30-hour Portuguese course for beginners.

Who can apply

  • Where you study now: You are enrolled at ESAP (to study abroad) or at a higher education institution that has an Erasmus agreement with ESAP (to study at ESAP).
  • Field of study: Open to all artistic disciplines at ESAP, including architecture, film and audiovisual media, communication design, directing, fine art and intermedia, theatre, and photography. As an exchange student, you cannot undertake final-year projects or placement modules.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Language: The courses are taught in Portuguese. A knowledge of Portuguese at B1 level is recommended but not essential; subject to agreement, lecturers may also deliver the course in English.
  • Nomination: In order to study at ESAP, you must first be nominated by the Erasmus Office at your home university.

How to apply

To study at ESAP, your application must be received by the Erasmus Office by 31 May if you wish to study for a full year or the winter semester, or by 15 November if you wish to study for the spring semester. If you wish to study abroad as an ESAP student, please complete the online form during the application period set by ESAP. Places are limited and will be allocated on the basis of an internal ranking list.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is linked to a specific art college and its partner network, so the pool of applicants is small. If you are already studying art at ESAP or one of its partner colleges and your course covers the subject areas on offer, your chances are good. Places for international students are limited, so make sure you apply in good time and demonstrate a strong academic record.
