About this scholarship

What the Erasmus grant gives you

You will receive a monthly grant of 500 EUR for a study placement or work placement abroad lasting between 2 and 12 months. The exact amount depends on where you are going: a higher amount is paid in countries with a higher cost of living. The grant covers the difference between the cost of living in Portugal and that in your destination country. You may also be eligible for additional allowances. If you receive Portuguese social security benefits, you will receive an extra 250 EUR per month, as well as a further 100 to 150 EUR. If you have a disability, you can claim additional travel and living expenses. There is also a one-off bonus of 50 EUR if you travel by train, bus or carpool instead of flying. The grant is administered by the University of the Algarve (UAlg) in Faro, Portugal, as part of the EU-wide Erasmus+ programme.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are enrolled at the University of the Algarve (UAlg).
  • Level: Open to students on short-term vocational training programmes (CTeSP), Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programmes.
  • Timing: You can go abroad from your first year of study onwards.
  • Field of study: Open to all degree programmes, provided that UAlg has an Erasmus+ partner university in your field of study.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. If you are from a country outside the EU, you will need a student visa for the country you are travelling to.
  • Fees: You have no outstanding tuition fees at UAlg.
  • Grades: Places are awarded to the top students in each faculty. Your score is made up of half your grade point average and half the ECTS credits you have already earned.

How to apply

First, check with your programme director and your faculty’s mobility coordinator to find out which partner universities you can go to. Then apply online via the Mobilidade.Net platform. There are two application rounds per year: the main round in February and a second round in May for any remaining places. Within each faculty, students are ranked according to their marks and credit points.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is open exclusively to students at UAlg, so you will not be competing against applicants from across the country, but against your fellow students. Places are allocated on the basis of a clear ranking list based on grades and credits earned within each faculty. If your grades and credits are good for your degree programme and there is a partner university in your field of study, your chances are good. Apply in the February round, as the May round is only for the remaining places.
