Greek student housing benefit (Stegastiko Epidoma)

You will receive an annual grant of 1,500 EUR to help with your rent whilst you are studying in Greece; this is paid for one academic year. The amount increases to 2,000 euros if your university is located outside the Attica region or the greater Thessaloniki area, or if you share a rented flat with another student. It amounts to 2,500 EUR if both conditions apply: you are studying outside Attica or Thessaloniki and are sharing a flat with another student. The benefit is provided by the Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sport. It is not a merit-based grant, but a means-tested allowance, which therefore depends on your family’s income rather than your grades.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at a Greek university or a state vocational school (SAEK).
• Study phase: This is your first degree. You have not taken any more semesters than your degree programme officially allows.
• Progress: Last year, you passed at least half of the exams for this academic year.
• Nationality: You are a Greek national or come from another EU country. If you come from a country outside the EU, you will only be eligible after at least 12 years of lawful, uninterrupted residence in Greece.
• Rented home: You are renting a flat away from your parents’ home in order to study, for a minimum period of 6 months. Neither you nor your parents may own this flat.
• Family income: Your family income last year was no more than 30,000 EUR. Add 3,000 EUR for each dependent child, starting from the second child.
• Property limit: Together, you and your parents own no more than 200 square metres of residential property. Houses in villages with fewer than 3,000 inhabitants are not taken into account.
• Field of study: Any subject.

How to apply

You submit your application online via the Ministry’s portal, logging in using your Greek TAXISnet credentials from the tax office. For the year 2025-2026, the application window runs from 30 June 2026 to 31 July 2026. It then takes around eight months before you are notified of the outcome.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a statutory entitlement, not a selection process. If you meet all the eligibility criteria, you will receive the money without being assessed against other applicants. The income ceiling and the rule that you must not be living at home with your parents are the most important eligibility criteria. Make sure you have your tenancy agreement and tax documents to hand in good time, and check that your family income is below the limit. Submit your application within the specified period, as late applications will not be accepted.
