Chancellor's Scholarship at Warwick

You get your full tuition fees paid plus a tax-free living allowance of about 25,600 EUR per year (£21,805 in 2026/27, roughly £1,817 per month) for 3.5 years. You also get a one-off research grant of about 5,900 EUR (£5,000) for costs linked to your project. On top of that you get up to 40 days of paid leave a year, plus paid short-term, family and medical leave. Fees are paid in full whether you count as a UK or overseas student. The University of Warwick's Doctoral College runs the award for students starting a doctorate in October 2026.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are applying for a research degree at Warwick: a PhD, MPhil/PhD, EngD, or entry to the PhD stage of an MRes+PhD.
• Start date: You begin in October 2026. You cannot push the scholarship to a later year.
• Current students: You are not already a research student at Warwick. A narrow exception applies to some 2+4 programmes in Business or Economics entering the PhD part.
• Field of study: Any subject. You can propose a project in any discipline, or an interdisciplinary project (one supervised by two departments) linked to a Warwick research centre or research focus area.
• Nationality: All nationalities welcome. UK and overseas applicants are treated equally.
• Grades: You have a first-class degree or a distinction at Master's level. Relevant professional experience can count instead.

How to apply

First contact a potential supervisor or department, because your department must back your application. Then apply for the course through Warwick's admissions system. After that, submit one scholarship application online. That single form is considered for all Doctoral College funding you qualify for. For October 2026 entry the course deadline was 8 December 2025 and the scholarship deadline 11 December 2025. The next round, for 2027 entry, opens in October 2026. Each department assesses and nominates its strongest applications in writing.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a full, competitive PhD scholarship open to any subject and any nationality, so it draws a large pool of strong applicants. Each department can only nominate a limited number of applications. So the fit between your project, your supervisor and the department's strengths matters as much as your grades. If you have a first-class or distinction-level record, a clearly argued research proposal and a supervisor already backing you, your prospects are realistic. An interdisciplinary project spanning two departments can give you an edge.
