Singh Fund Scholarships

What you get

You get a one-off payment of about 2,300 EUR (£2,000) for the current academic year. The University of Birmingham's School of Computer Science awards ten of these scholarships each year, using a fund set up by a former Computer Science graduate. You are also invited to a scholars' event on campus, where you may meet the donor and other recipients. On top of that, you can take part in informal mentoring (one-to-one guidance) on career planning, summer internships and building confidence.

Who can apply

• Course: You study an undergraduate Computer Science programme at the University of Birmingham (Edgbaston campus).
• Year: You are in your second or third year.
• Fee status: You are registered as a Home student for fee purposes.
• Nationality and residence: You are from the UK or Ireland and live in the UK or Ireland.
• Your situation: You face personal or financial circumstances that make studying harder, for example money worries, health pressures, caring for a family member or difficult living conditions. Any type of challenge counts, as long as you can explain how it affects you and how the money would help.

How to apply

You apply through the online form on the School of Computer Science's Student Experience Canvas page and answer two written questions about your circumstances. For 2025/26 the deadline was 5pm on Friday 23 January 2026. If you are shortlisted, you then send a video of up to three minutes. A university panel picks the ten recipients in February.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is cut narrowly. Only second- and third-year Computer Science students at Birmingham who are Home students and can show a real personal or financial challenge qualify, so the eligible group is small. With ten scholarships each year, someone who clearly fits and explains their situation well has solid prospects. The panel values clear, honest answers over a polished pitch, so a specific, credible account of your circumstances matters most.
