Sussex Bursary

You get about 1,150 EUR (£1,000) in your first year and about 575 EUR (£500) in each following year of your degree at the University of Sussex. The money is paid once a year, around 13 November, as a single lump sum. It is a grant you never repay, meant to help with your living costs while you study. Everyone who qualifies gets it, and there is no limit on the number of students. It is funded by the University of Sussex.

Who can apply

• University: You study full time at the University of Sussex, either an undergraduate degree or a Foundation Year.
• Where you study: You are based at Sussex this year, not on a Placement Year or Year Abroad. In those years you pay reduced fees and do not get the bursary.
• Home status: Student Finance counts you as a Home student for 2026/27, meaning you are from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland or the wider UK.
• Start date: You start or return to your course in September 2026 or later.
• Household income: Your family's yearly household income is below £35,000 (about 40,000 EUR), as assessed by Student Finance.
• Other funding: You do not already get a non-means-tested grant. For example, Welsh-funded students and Year 2/3 Social Work students are excluded.

How to apply

There is no application. The University gets your income details straight from Student Finance England, SAAS (Scotland) or Student Finance NI. So make sure one of them assesses your household income. The last date for that assessment is 1 August 2027. You get a notification letter from Student Finance in late June 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

If you fit the criteria, you get the bursary. There is no competition and no cap on the number of awards. The only real hurdle is the income test. As long as your assessed household income stays below £35,000 and Student Finance validates it in time, the payment is yours.
