Martijn Zwart Fund scholarship

You receive a one-off payment of 2,500 EUR to 5,000 EUR to study Dutch language and culture at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. You apply for a specific amount in that range. If many people apply, the budget is split and you may get less than you asked for. The money is meant to cover your study costs. The fund supports Americans and Canadians who want to study the Dutch language.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You hold US or Canadian citizenship.
• Programme: You are starting one of four programmes at the Department of Dutch Language and Culture: the Bachelor's in Dutch language and culture, the Master's in Dutch language and culture, the research Master's in Dutch literature and culture, or the Dutch-language track of the Master's in Literature Today.
• Where you study: You study at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.
• Financial need: You need financial help to cover your study costs.
• Motivation: You can explain why you are a good fit for studying Dutch in Utrecht.

How to apply

Send a one to two page cover letter with a budget by email to Emmeline Besamusca. Explain who you are, what you plan to study and why you need the money. Set out your expected costs and how you will cover the rest. The deadline is 15 May, and you hear back by 15 June at the latest. The money is only paid out once you are admitted to your programme.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is cut very narrowly. You must be American or Canadian and be joining one of four specific Dutch-studies programmes at Utrecht, so the eligible group is small. If you clearly fit those conditions and can document real financial need, your prospects are good. Because the budget can be split across applicants, you may be offered less than the full amount you request.
