Oxford-Exeter College Coltart and Bagby Scholarship in Anthropology (OECB)

Benefit

You get your course fees paid at the UK/Ireland (Home) rate plus a grant for your living costs. This runs for the whole time you owe fees, normally the three full-time years of a DPhil. A DPhil is Oxford's name for a PhD, a research doctorate. Awards like this are usually worth around 35,000 EUR per year (about GBP 30,000), covering fees and living costs together. Exeter College and the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography run the award jointly. If you win, you become a member of Exeter College for the rest of your studies.

Eligibility

• Your offer: You hold, or are about to receive, an offer for the DPhil in Anthropology at Oxford's School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography.
• Field of study: Anthropology only. One part of the fund favours research into the development of urban, literate societies.
• Where you study: The University of Oxford, and you commit to Exeter College for your whole degree.
• Fee status: The award covers fees at the Home/UK-Ireland rate, so it suits applicants with that status rather than the higher international rate.
• Study phase: You are starting the doctorate, not continuing one you already hold.

How to apply

There is no separate form. You apply for the DPhil in Anthropology by Oxford's normal graduate deadline in January. You do not need to name Exeter College as your preference. Exeter and the School pick a scholar from all eligible DPhil applicants, and decisions come in late spring.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is cut very narrowly. Usually only one or two such scholarships exist, and they go to doctoral applicants in a single subject who already have an Oxford offer and Home fee status. That keeps the eligible group small. But it is a highly competitive doctorate, and the award is only given where a suitable candidate is found. If you have a strong DPhil application in anthropology and fit the Home-rate profile, especially with a topic on urban literate societies, you are in genuine contention.
